I think they know full well how journalism works. They just do not like it so they pretend what we do is so horrible! The thing I find the sleaziest is posting a private inquiry between a reporter and yourself. That used to be against the rules, but they don't follow the rules. We do. We always give them an opportunity to comment or rebut. Journalism is a thankless profession.
tbf they're a bit touchy these days seeing as how they're making a lot of money investing in companies that facilitate north korean money laundering and other even less savory things.
How journalism works is not of interest to these tech oligarchs.
What they want is : power without being accountable to larger Society. This is something we can't allow them to have as there is the possibility for them to destroy/transform Society in ways the citizens would hate and NEVER vote for.
The more money they have avalailable for use, the more they need to be under the microscope.
In fact, we should not allow billionaires and the like to even exist !
"There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody. ... You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did. Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea. God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is, you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along."
It is partially tech journalism's assignment editors that enabled these egotistical and short-sighted founders to go for years without having to really account for what they were doing to consumers. Better late than never, I guess.

No need to pretend, what the liars who pass for "journalists" do these days is horrible.

> Perhaps I’m not well traveled enough, but I’ve never heard another journalist use the word “hit piece” with any seriousness.
Yes, I'd imagine they'd prefer to use terms that let them avoid thinking about what they're doing.

Let me add this quote :

Motivated misunderstanding is also in the mix.
