Hi, I’m Jacob. I'm an independent journalist in New York. I’m the co-author of the New York Times best seller “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud” (Abrams, 2023), and the author of “Terms of Service: Social Media and the Price of Constant Connection” (HaperCollins, 2015). I’m currently working on a book about the the reactionary tilt of Silicon Valley elites, which will be published by Bloomsbury in 2025.
I write about the politics of tech, surveillance, privacy, the nihilism of our forever wars, the depredations of a clueless media, and the occasional book review. I’ve talked on TV, podcasts, book festivals, and wherever else they’ll have me.
My concerns range from the dangers of unchecked militarism to the rising tides to the inability to be alone. I think that the future sucked. I'm entangled in all of this stuff alongside you.
In recent years, I’ve written a lot about crypto and corporate fraud, the hallucinations of the ZIRP economy, and the emergence of right-wing, MAGA-supporting tech oligarchs.
I'm a contributing editor for The Baffler and The New Republic. I’ve written for a bunch of websites, magazines, and newspapers whose op-ed pages you might love to hate.
Everything on this Substack is free, but I welcome paid subscriptions and donations.
I am always open to tips and conversations on background. Don’t message from a work device.
